Greenland Driving Advice and Car Hire Info

Driving In Greenland

Greenland drives on the right and you can drive on your own photo licence providing it is written in Roman alphabet lettering. Otherwise you will need an International Driving permit. Most roads have a 40kmh limit though there are a couple of stretches in Nuuk which reach 60kmh. Alcohol limit as zero %.

There is very little road transport in Greenland- most travel is done by air or boat. There are 150 km  of roads in the whole country and 60 km of roads are paved- these are roads within settlements or roads to airfields.. There are only around 18 towns and virtually no roads between settlements. Road transport is only possible at certain times of year and gravel roads are often in poor condition due to winter ice covering and spring thaws. There are plans to construct a 170km road between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq in the west of the country, though this was still at the planning stage in 2020.The Capital city Nuuk  has the most developed road network in the country and has a regular bus service linking the town centre with the airport, the outlying districts and neighborhoods of Nuussuaq, Qinngorput and Qernertunnguit in Quassussuup Tungaa. In East Greenland and in the Arctic circle in Winter you are liable to come across dog sleds on the road – they always have right of way.

Greenland would certainly be a driving abroad destination with a difference. Please let me know if you’ve experienced a self driving trip in the country.

Although I try and keep the information in the site updated as much as possible, in a rapidly moving world, situations can change daily.
