Azores

Driving in the Azores
Driving abroad in the Azores is on the right and you can rent a car using the photo licence of most countries. The roads on most of the Islands are in good condition though can be very narrow in places – a small rental car may be a good idea. Direction finding is generally not difficult, with Ponta Delgada the only small town likely to cause any stress, though most towns employ a one way system.

Road signs are usually good. Some roads are steep, mountainous and winding so may be best avoided at night and driven with care in the day. Driving standards are usually good and traffic is light. The main issue you may encounter is fog which can be frequent due to the islands’ position in the Atlantic. Proceed with caution if you encounter fog and if visibility becomes seriously limited, find a safe place to pull over off the road and wait for it to clear.
