Cote d’Ivoire Driving Advice and Car Hire Info
Driving In Cote d’Ivoire
Before planning aon Driving abroad in Ivory Coast you should check the latest situation in the country on the website of your Government. Generally there are travel advisories in place covering most of the country’s border regions. Roads in Abidjan are improving but outside the city road conditions are generally poor, especially in the rainy season when many roads become unpassable. The Trans–West African Coastal Highway provides a paved link to Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, with paved highways to Mali and Burkina Faso feeding into the coastal highway. When construction of roads and bridges in Liberia and Sierra Leone is complete, the highway will link to another seven countries to the west and north-west
Aside from the usual issues of road conditions, roaming livestock and badly driven and sometimes unlit vehicles, a main consideration of driving in Ivory Coast is how to react at unofficial or official road blocks. Unofficial road blocks are often set up as part of a political demonstration in Abidjan and particularly close to universities. They can easily switch from boisterous behaviour to violence and should be avoided, even if this means performing a U-turn at a safe distance. However, don’t ever attempt to avoid an official police or army roadblock. Vehicles attempting to turn around to avoid a police road block have been fired upon so , if in doubt whether a roadblock is official or not, you’re probably best to assume it is!
Although I try and keep the information in the site updated as much as possible, in a rapidly moving world, situations can change daily. Therefore please use the site as an approximate guide, and in conjunction with other resources in order to form your view on driving conditions, roads, safety etc.
