Andorra Driving Advice and Car Hire Info

Driving In Andorra

Andorra drives on the right and you can drive on the photo licence of EU countries or your own licence plus an International Driving Permit . All vehicles must carry 2 red warning triangles (to be placed in front of and behind the vehicle in the event of an accident or breakdown), a spare pair of glasses (if needed for driving), a spare wheel, and a full set of spare light bulbs plus the tools to change them. If you have to leave your vehicle due to an accident or breakdownyou must wear a reflective jacket.

80% of Andorra’s 270km of roads are paved and in good condition. The two main roads out of Andorra la Vella are the CG-1 to the Spanish border, and the CG-2 to the French border via the Envalira Tunnel near Pas de la Casa. In winter, the main roads are usually quickly cleared of snow and remain accessible, but the CG2 main road out of Andorra to France is occasionally closed by avalanches. Other main roads out of Andorra la Vella are the CG-3 to Arcalis and CG-4 to Pal. Secondary roads are sometimes closed in winter because of deep snow.

The main town, Andorra La Vella is actually quite traffic congested. Away from the centre the other settlements are ski villages which are quiet in the summer and (obviously!) snowy in Winter. You may need snow chains if travelling off the main roads at this time of year. Roads are well kept and though you’re high up, there aren’t too many of the narrow passes and hairpin bends you get in some mountainous countries.

Although I try and keep the information in the site updated as much as possible, in a rapidly moving world, situations can change daily. Therefore please use the site as an approximate guide, and in conjunction with other resources in order to form your view on driving conditions, roads, safety etc.

Andorra Self Driving Rules

You will be allowed to drive the car into Spain , France and most mainland Europe countries but one way international rentals aren’t possible via Europcar and Avis terms are unclear. As its likely you’d fly in Gerona or Carcassone, I’d recommend renting the car from there and driving into Andorra.
